You’re most likely looking at an agency similar to Dialog because deals are stalling, the pitch takes three calls to land or the team tells many different stories.
A product marketing consultancy or agency like Dialog is not the only move. Most founders won’t hire us. This piece walks the real options: keep going as you are, hire a product marketer, run positioning yourself, bring in a branding agency… or work with Dialog.
If you’re early and the story is still changing every week and the product is moving super fast, start with the free guides and come back later. That is a perfectly good outcome.
Keep going / status quo
This is what most companies do. And sometimes it is the right call.
If you have bigger fires (cash, product, a hire that cannot wait), positioning will not feel like the priority. You have a business to run, fix the fires. Keep selling the way you sell today. Use the market to teach you what works.
The cost of status quo only shows up later: longer cycles, “we need another call”, reps creating their own stories with nobody being truly clear on exactly why deals die. If that pain is still background noise, stay put.
Do it yourself and use our guides
If the team is small and nimble enough, you can get a long way without buying help.
Start here:
Or the hub: Free positioning guides
DIY works when the founder can protect calendar for research and a workshop, and when the company is still tight enough that one shared doc actually gets used. It won’t be perfect but it will get you a long way.
Hire a product marketer
Hiring a PMM is a strong option when you need the capability in-house for the long run.
One caveat: not every product marketer runs great positioning and messaging exercises. Plenty are excellent at launches, decks and enablement kits. Fewer will sit in win/loss, pressure-test the story with buyers and force the company onto one narrative.
If you hire, write the job so “own positioning and messaging from buyer evidence” is the core, not a side quest. Ask for examples of positioning they shipped that sales actually used.
Warning: these people are rare.
Branding or generalist agencies
A strategic, data-driven branding or marketing agency can help if you already know you need brand systems, campaigns or creative production.
They will rarely be a specialist in the narrow problem Dialog works on: buyer-evidence positioning and messaging that transfers into sales conversations. Expect strength in craft and campaigns. Do not expect them to replace a proper positioning process unless that is explicitly what you bought.
When Dialog fits
Dialog is a fit when the story is the bottleneck and the product has most likely strayed from its strengths.
Typical signals: deals you should win are dying late; the pitch only lands on call three and your ICP is super broad and vague.
We build positioning on buyer evidence (win/loss, interviews, competitive reality and lots of data), then turn it into a clear ICP, a clear position in the market and messaging that complements that.
When Dialog is the wrong fit
Skip us (for now) if:
you are still very early and hunting the first proper customers
the positioning and messaging change every week because the product and market are still teaching you
sales is almost entirely founder-led and there is no team that needs the story transferred
you have louder fires than the story
In those cases, keep selling. Learn from the market. Use the free guides. Revisit when the pain is the story not travelling, not when you are still finding the floor.
This is not an elite club. It is just not the right time to get the most out of an engagement.
Next step
If the “when Dialog fits” list sounded like your week, book a call. If it didn’t, use the guides or hire the PMM who will actually own positioning.
